Speaking up Against the Bills

Communities not Cuts have been gathering research on the Bills to support community members to understand the proposed changes and raise our voices. To get involved, please send us an email at [email protected] or contact us through social media (Instagram Facebook Twitter).

Are you mad about the PC's new legislative agenda? Do you want to speak up and confidently be heard by the government?

CNC is here to help members of the public to speak at Legislative Committee hearings on the issues that mater to them. All Manitobans can speak directly to Legislative Committees about proposed Bills. Let's do it together!

At noon on April 1st CST, come chat with folks about their experiences presenting to committees, and share your plans to speak on specific bills.  We are hosting an event where we'll hear from people who have already spoken at committee, and where we will help you sign up and prepare to speak as well.

Last week, CNC organised a community training session with former MLA Rob Altemeyer to learn how to present effectively and confidently at a Legislative CommitteeYou can watch a recording of the training session on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/communitiesnotcuts/videos/467018704430157

Four members of CNC spoke at the first committee meeting, and have described the experience as challenging, but also invigorating, and ultimately rewarding. Our first speaker was reprimanded and repeatedly interrupted for not strictly addressing the content of the bill on the table, speaking to the unprecedented and undemocratic actions of our government when they submitted 19 mystery bills. Our second speaker was interrupted twice and the third and forth speaker delivered their interventions without interruption. By continually referring back to the bill on the table we were able to ensure our objection to the process were recorded.

You can watch recording from presentations to Committees, here: https://youtu.be/AKAk16iYbZw?t=3724 (Patrick 1:02:46, Shawn 1:33:05, Michelle 1:44:33).

Please share these resources with anyone that you think may be interested to speak at the Legislative Committee in response to these bills.

NOW IS THE TIME TO REGISTER

Call and register to present to a Legislative Committee about the bill(s) that you are concerned about: 204-945-3636. You will be asked your name, contact information and the bill that you would like to speak to and you will be called and told when to present.

If you have any questions or would like more info we could work together to make this happen. You can also sign up with CNC for support to present at the Committees: https://forms.gle/cPY63NcR35NUFWGS8
